In slow motion

As you can see I have not been updating my blog lately. I have been meaning to make a "comeback" but weeks keep passing by and this blog just remains neglected. The problem is my whole life has been moving in slow motion lately, nothing much happening and if there is nothing happening, there is not much material to write posts about. And IF something happens, it is often of a very private nature that I do not want to share with the rest of the world. Could always post loads of pictures and skip the text, but I have not even been doing much changes in the house, my decorating bug was gone for a long time, but now it is slowly creeping back :-)


Have not done much Christmas decorating this year as we are spending Christmas in Finland, but I have dotted few little things around the house. It is hard to imagine that Christmas is next week already. I have not even played any of my Christmas cd's yet and only started to write Christmas cards yesterday!


At least the weather has finally turned more wintry over here. It's been cold and crispy for couple of days now and the nature is covered by a pretty layer of frost.

Autumn colour

So sorry that I have been so quiet lately, but I have been busy with few other things. Been doing some computer work and as I am still recovering and not able to do horribly much, I had to let the blogging go for a while. Tough decision, but had to be made :-) For the same reason I am writing this post only in English, anteeksi vain kaikki suomalaiset blogiystävät, as posting requires slightly less typing this way ;-)

Anyway, I do not know what it is, but from time to time I start to yearn for some colour! Just when I got our living room almost "tranquil", I decided I wanted a little splash of colour. To cheer me up perhaps? I remembered we had these Matryoshka dolls tucked away somewhere and decided to put them on display. My husband was quite pleased about this as he inherited them from his granny and said he's always liked them, ever since he was a little boy. And I think they look quite cute too :-)


At least our kitchen is never lacking colour with its deep red cabinet doors and drawer fronts, which by the way are still the original ones from the 1920's :-)


From the indoors to outdoors. Some lovely autumn colour from our garden. I have to say Hortensia looks pretty even when the blooming time is over. And absolutely can not remember the name of the other plant :-)

A wee update / Pieni päivitys

Lately I have been a bit busy with other things, so blogging has suffered slightly. This is just a wee post to let you know I have not abandoned my blog all together, but will return shortly with a vengeance. In the meantime I wish you all a lovely September and leave you with few autumn pictures.

Viime aikoina olen ollut hieman kiireinen muiden asioiden parissa, joten bloggaaminen on hieman kärsinyt siinä sivussa. En suinkaan ole hylännyt blogiani kokonaan ja palaan pian uudella tarmolla ja innolla. Toivottelen teille kaikille aivan ihanaa syyskuun jatkoa muutaman syystunnelmaisen kuvan kera.

Autumn moods / Syystunnelmia

It feels like autumn has officially arrived to The Netherlands. Our garden is starting to look very tired and the weather has been miserable; piss pouring rain and heavy winds, but at least we got little bit of sun earlier today. During that dry spell we managed to do some work on our patio and it was really nice to spend several hours outdoors in the fresh air :-)

Tuntuu siltä että syksy on virallisesti saapunut Alankomaihin. Puutarhamme alkaa näyttämään aika väsähtäneeltä ja säät ovat olleet surkeat; kaatosadetta ja kovia tuulia, mutta onneksi ainakin tänään päivällä pääsimme hieman nauttimaan auringonpaisteesta. Saimme tehtyä jonkin verran hommia patiollamme ja oli tosi mukava viettää monta tuntia raittiissa ulkoilmassa :-)

Otherwise I have not done much lately and life has been slow in general. I have managed to sort out few small bits and bobs, like finally got my granddad's old letter framed and it is now hanging on our bedroom wall. And I know these angel candle holders are officially Christmas decorations, but I kept them on display the whole summer! My house, my rules ;-)

Muuten en ole tehnyt paljoakaan viime aikoina ja elämä on noin yleensäkin sujunut aika hiljaista tahtia. Muutamat pikkujutut olen saanut hoidettua, kuten vihdoinkin sain vaarini vanhan kirjeen kehystettyä ja se roikkuu nyt makuuhuoneemme seinällä. Ja tiedän että nämä enkelikynttilänjalat ovat virallisesti joulukoristeita, mutta minä olen pitänyt ne esillä koko kesän! Minun taloni, minun sääntöni ;-)

And now I am going to grab my book again (I am currently reading a slightly grim book called Witch hunt - History of a persecution) and little bit later I am going to curl up on the couch and watch tonight's episode of the TV-series The Tudors, which I love. Have a wonderful weekend! :-)

Simple beauty / Yksinkertaista kauneutta

I have already mentioned in my previous posts that my father-in-law is an amateur artist and I am a big fan of his work. Couple of months ago he had an exhibition where I spotted this piece and I just HAD to have it. I fell for its calming colours and simple beauty. Main materials are painted plywood and old strips of lead. It now hangs on our bedroom wall and looks spot on.

Olen jo maininnut aikaisemmissa postauksissani että appeni on amatööritaiteilija ja pidän kovasti hänen töistään. Muutama kuukausi sitten hänellä oli taidenäyttely, jossa bongasin tämän teoksen ja minun oli aivan PAKKO saada se. Ihastuin teoksen rauhoittaviin väreihin ja yksinkertaiseen kauneuteen. Päämateriaalit ovat maalattu lastulevy ja vanhat lyijylevyn suikaleet. Teos roikkuu nyt makuuhuoneemme seinällä ja sopii paikalleen täydellisesti.

Penkkiurheilua ja auringonpaistetta

Viime aikoina meitä on hellitty todella kauniilla ilmoilla. Päivästä toiseen auringonpaistetta ja mukavan leppoisia lämpötiloja. Luvattu helleaalto ei onneksi koskaan saapunut. Vaikkakin lähestymme jo uhkaavasti elokuun loppua, innostuin vielä heivaamaan puutarhakalusteet ja kukkaruukut uuteen järjestykseen patiollamme. Siellä olemmekin istuskelleet melkein koko päivän tänään, mutta sen verran minussa on penkkiurheilijan vikaa että jopa tällaisilla ilmoilla nuo Berliinin MM-kisat vetävät minut ajoittain sisätiloihin istumaan. Miestäni ei yleisurheilu kiinnosta pätkän vertaa, joten saan katsella kisoja aivan rauhassa...


Muistan kun kouluaikoina inhosin intohimoisesti koulun vuotuisia yleisurheilupäiviä. Oli pakollista ottaa osaa kahteen lajiin ja minä valitsin aina 100 metrin juoksun, koska se pyrähdys oli nopeasti ohi. Pidemmistä matkoista näin vain painajaisia. Valitsin myös toisen lajini samoja periaatteita noudattaen, se oli yleensä joko pituushyppy tai kuulantyöntö, molemmat yhtä säälittävin tuloksin. Tuosta yleisurheilukammostani huolimatta olen aina suurella mielenkiinnolla seurannut Olympialaisia ja MM-kisoja. Kunnon penkkiurheilija siis :-)

Sukututkimus / Genealogy

En muista olenko jo aikaisemmin maininnut, mutta olen jo vuosia ollut kiinnostunut sukututkimuksesta ja harrastanutkin sitä jonkin verran. Historia yleensäkin on aina kiehtonut minua. Sen jälkeen kun muutin Alankomaihin sukututkimusharrastus jäi hieman taka-alalle, mutta nyt viimeisimmän Suomen loman jälkeen olen täynnä uutta intoa ja tarmoa.

Aikaisemmin etäisyys Suomesta ei helpottanut tutkimusta, mutta onneksi nykyään yhä enemmän ja enemmän tietoa on saatavilla myös internetin kautta. Viimeisen viikon olen viettänyt vanhojen henkikirjojen (väestöluettelo) parissa, joista iso osa löytyy skannattuna Kansallisarkiston Digitaaliarkistosta. Se on todella kiehtovaa puuhaa, mutta silmät alkavat harittamaan kun niitä vanhoja käsialoja ja usein hyvin haalistuneita tekstejä on tihrustanut jonkin aikaa, mutta sehän ei minua pysäytä :-)


I do not remember if I have mentioned this before, but for years already I have been interested in genealogy. History in general has always fascinated me. After I moved to the Netherlands my genealogy hobby was left to the back burner, but now after my latest visit to Finland I am full of fresh enthusiasm and energy.

Previously the distance from Finland was not helping my research, but gladly these days more and more information can be obtained via the internet. The past week I have spent with old census records, which can be found from The National Archives' Digital archive. It is very fascinating, but you start to get cross eyed once you have been reading those old handwritten and often faded texts for a while, but that is not going to stop me :-)

Ihmiset näissä vanhoissa valokuvissa eivät ole sukulaisiani. Löysin nämä kuvat paikallisesta antiikkiliikkeestä enkä voinut vastustaa kiusausta, sillä rakastan vanhoja valokuvia.

People in these old photos are not my relatives. I found these from our local antique shop and could not resist the temptation, as I love old photos.

Uusia aarteita. Sain tämän kauniin vanhan kaulakorun äidiltäni, joka oli vuorostaan saanut sen tädiltään vuosia sitten. Isotätini oli saanut korun häälahjaksi 40-luvulla.

New treasures. I got this beautiful old necklace from my mother, who had gotten it from her aunt years ago. My great-auntie got it as a wedding present in the 1940's.

Loma on ohi / Holiday is over

Kesälomamme Suomessa päättyi liian lyhyeen, kuten yleensä. Palasimme kotiin viikko sitten ja nyt tuntuu kuin lomasta olisi jo ikuisuus. Meitä hemmoteltiin kerrassaan loistavilla aurinkoisilla ilmoilla ja muutenkin loma sujui mukavissa merkeissä. Ystäviä, sukulaisia, auringonpaistetta, hyvää ruokaa ja juomaa... siinä ne perusaineet onnistuneen loman luomiseksi.

Tällä kertaa päädyimme myös harrastamaan melko paljon hyötyliikuntaa erään ihanasti sormia syyhyttävän puutarhaprojektin kimpussa, josta kenties kuulette jossain vaiheessa enemmän äitini blogissa. Mutta nyt pitää lopetella, sillä mieheni grillaa parhaillaan rakastamaansa suomalaista makkaraa (joita toimme pari pakettia mukanamme) ja tuoksut herauttavat vedet kielelleni, mmmhh :-)

Our holiday in Finland ended too soon, as usual. We came back home a week ago and already the holiday feels like a distant memory. We were pampered with a gorgeous sunny weather the whole time. Friends, relatives, sunshine, good food and drink... those are the basic ingredients of a successful holiday and ours was definitely one of those :-)

Kotihommia riittäisi vaikka muille jakaa, mutta tänään minä vietin mieluummin aikaa napsimalla kuvia sieltä täältä, lukemalla hyvää kirjaa ja ihan reilusti laiskottelemalla. Mutta huomenna pitää ryhdistäytyä, sillä puuhaa riittää ennen ensi viikolla alkavaa Suomen lomaamme, jota muuten odotamme jo innolla.

Lazy summer days

Muutama kuva meidän pienestä puutarhasta. Täällä on ollut todella helteinen ilma jo pari viikkoa ja minusta tuntuu että jos helteet ei kohta lopu niin minä sulan. Kun lämpötila kohoaa yli 25 asteen, niin minun kipurajani ylittyy ja alan puhkua tuskissani. Puutarha huutaa vettä ja nurmikkomme alkaa muuttua vihreästä ruskeaksi. Sadetta kaivataan, kuin myös ilmaa raikastuttavaa ukkosta. Taidan heittää tuossa nurmikolla pienen sadetanssin tänä iltana :-) Jäätelöä on tullut syötyä enemmän kuin laki sallii, mutta kun se viilentää niin ihanasti ja maistuu makoisalta tietenkin :-)

Few pictures from our tiny garden. The weather has been so hot lately I feel like I am slowly melting away. When the temperature rises above 25 degrees, my pain threshold has been reached and I start to suffer. Our garden is screaming for water and the lawn is starting to turn from green to brown. Some rain is desperately needed... I just might perform a wee rain dance tonight :-) I have also eaten way too much ice cream, but it cools me down so nicely and tastes yummy of course :-)

Maalauspuuhissa jälleen

Ruokailuhuoneessa sijaitseva laatikostomme on saanut valkoisen maalipinnan (sama maali kuin tuoleissa ja kaapissa). Teimme siitä tarkoituksella hieman kuluneen näköisen. Edellinen öljytty puupinta ei oikein sopinut yhteen uuden ilmeen saaneen ruokapöytämme kanssa, joten päädyimme tähän ratkaisuun. Tai olisihan tuo mies pystynyt elämään edellisenkin ratkaisun kanssa, mutta minä en ;-) Lopultakin voin sanoa että olen tyytyväinen. Pieni ruokailuhuoneemme tuntuu nyt paljon avarammalta ja valoisammalta. Yhtä seinää pitäisi vielä maalata, mutta se projekti voi odottaa jonkin aikaa.

Trip to Berlin

Last week we were in Berlin and had a great time (this was my first time there). Berlin is a fantastic city to photograph, especially black & white works really well with the atmosphere and the buildings. We took close to 1000 photos (!!) during our stay, which is staggering. So you can imagine the selection below is just a wee drop in the ocean...

The sheer size of Berlin was almost daunting at first. I have lived in London but I have to say London feels like a small town compared to Berlin, and I am not kidding. The main reason we went to Berlin was to see a gig of my favourite band, Depeche Mode, at the Olympic Stadium. The gig was fantastic and what an experience to sing, wave hands, applaud and cheer together with about 80 000 other fans.

Berlin impressed me in so many different ways. The locals were incredibly friendly, food was good and so amazingly cheap, not to mention German beer and wine, public transportation worked like a dream etc. So all in all our trip was exhausting but definitely worth it and some day we will go there again.

New beginnings

During the past few days we have been enjoying the gorgeous summery weather, although I have to admit today it was a bit too hot for my liking. Perhaps it is that Nordic blood of mine... can not handle the heat. Should not be complaining though, I love the summer :-)

Then to other things. There has been a lot of changes happening in our lives this year, mostly very unexpected ones. Me and my partner have been busy brainstorming and planning (or re-planning) our future. I am starting to think this year is all about new beginnings. There might even be career changes on the horizon and all sorts of new exciting opportunities to explore.

When you are put face to face with an uncertain future, for whatever reason, I reckon the most important thing is to remain positive. My grandmother always used to tell me I was born under lucky stars and I would like to think she was right. Time will tell, but for now we are having fun brainstorming and daydreaming.
